NORTH CANTERBURY.
KAIAPOI. The gala held at "The Pines," Kaiapoi Beach, yesterday, in aid of improvements to this popular seaside resort, proved most successful, •in spite of an unfavourable outlook in the morning. The function attracted a very large attendance of local residents and visitors. As usual a. fleet of cars was arranged ijo convey people from Kaiappi free of charge, and many availed themselves of this opportunity of. visiting the beach and taking.part i,n the.gala festivities, The Pines Association ,had been energetically for, some' "weeks', and as a 'result excellent arrangements were made for the entertainment of those'present. Included in the amusements were.-.the toboggan slide, .ocean, wave, chocolate alley, and a number of other sideshows- and various competitions. Good business was done at the refreshment stall,- while' the ice-cream and sbft drink stall were also well patronised. During the afternoon a programme of sports was carried out, .special arrangements being made for the children. The Kaiapoi Brass Band added interest to the proceedings by playing selections. A Dark Town Band was_ also in attendance, and'caused 'considerable amusement. A'baby show held in connexion with the gaja resulted as follows:—Under six months, boy, Mrs Price; girl,' Mrs P. Rouse. Over six months and under twelve, boy. Mrs 1L Cattermole; girl. Sirs TClison. The gala is to be continued on New Year's Day, when free transport from Kaiapoi will ngain be arranged, and no charge for admission will be made" to "The Pines."
