TO-DAY'S SPEED CARNIVAL.
NEW BRIGHTON TROTTING GROUNDS. A further contingent of North Island riders engaged in to-day's speed competitions, to be held on the New Brighton Trotting Grounds by the Pioneer Sports Club, arrived by the ferry yesterday, including J,_ E. Arnott, who is expected to make history on the local track this afternoon so far as speed records go. This rider holds the Australasian grass record for a mile, which stands at 48 l-ssec. He also won the first Australian championship at Brisbane recently. A. 0. Leeoh, who won the Manawatu championship, was aIBO amongst the arrivals yesterday and had a spin over the course, which he statod is in splendid . condition and very fast. D. C. Managh, the holder of the New Zealand middle-weight championship, will also be a starter, together with Ttii Morgan, who defeated Peroy Coleman on the local track last' .March; Kilminster, who won the ten miles handicap at Foxton recently in 9min Bsaec, together with Tim Wilkinson, W. H. Tolley, the Feilding champion, ana others are expected to arrive this morning, and also two members of the New Zealand Auto Cycle Union executive. The Mayor has consented to present the winner of the classic event with the championship cup attached to that event, which will be done prior to the start of the Canterbury Handicap at 4 p.m Special tram? wiU run to end from the grounds during the afternoon. With fine weather, some very exciting sport "hould be provided.
