A. The annual meeting of the Loyal Timaru Lodge of Oddfellows was field on i Wednesday, when Bro. Eric McConachy, IN.G., presided. Sympathy with the King in his illness was expressed in I the manner of the Order. Owing to altered conditions both P.P.G.M. Bro. H. H. Brown and P.G. Bro. R. W. Marshall retired from the office of sick visitors. Bro. Brown had held his office for 13 years, and Bro. Matshall for seven years. It was decided to inscribe in the records of the Lodge a minute appreciative of their services and'the philanthropic principle underlying their retirement. It was resolved to have only one sick visitor and P.P.G.M. Bro. Geo. Hilton was appointed. The Friendly SoCieaies' Council'report showed that in vidw of the present epidemic of scarlet fever the Hospital Board scheme was proving a great boon to members. It was reported 1 that so satisfactory had the past financial experience proved that the responsible authorities were applying, to the' Health Department for leave to renew the arrangement. The'P.G.M. presented P.G. Bro. Wm. J. Tonkin with a P.G. collar and jewel in recognition of his services. P.G. Bro. Allan Dennison was granted a certificate of merit, and he was recommended to the District for his Purple Degree, and admission to the Past Grands Lodge. Small Bird Pest. \The small bird pest has been given cpnsiderable attention by the South Canterbury Farmers' Union with a result that the nuisance has been abated to; a very large extent, and South Canterbury; farmers have expressed gratification at the reSults achieved by means of phosphorised oats obtained from the Department of Agriculture. The campaign commenced in August last and over 200 seven-pound tins of ■poison were ; distributed throughout the district. An indication of the results obtained by the use of phosphorised oats is the fact that on one farm m the Timaru district the contents .of one tin alone ..were responsible for the destruction of. 3d dozen birds.. i

The contractors for the Orari water supply in the Temuka water supply ex-, tensions (Messrs Moyes and Walsh) have written to the Town Clerk stating that they purpose making a start on the work at once. They further advise that it will be to the mutual advantage of all 'concerned if Mr Jeune can find a suitable team of men locally, and if this can be done,- they will not bring men from Christchurch. Personal. . Much sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs James Hooper, of Shaw street, Temuka, whose youngest son, aged fourteen years, died in the Timaru Hospital. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, and included in tho many who were present were the pupils of. Standards IV. V., and VI. of the Temuka District Higl School. The Rev. A. Blakemore conducted the services at the graveside. Among the wreaths was one from the pupils of the higher standards of the District High School. Miss Lusy Gaffaney and Mrs Barron, of Arowhenua, left on Wednesday for Christchurch, where they will in future reside. WAIMATE. ing held on "Wednesday night. _ The first part of the evening, a euchre tournament, was held, the winner being Mr C. Kibblewhite. The president of the club (Mr G. Manchester) presented the prizes. Before doing so he expressed pleasure at the attendance, and thanked Mr Clarbis, the armourer, for presenting a shield to the club for the junior miniature aggregate. GERALBINE. Mr and Mrs T. M. Charters- arrived by car from Christchurch yesterday and aro the guests of Mr A. A. Rcaddie, "Markinch." This afternoon a cricket" match will be played on the AVaihi College grounds between teams from Waihi College and Geraldine District High School. Miss Alice Hughes, who for a number of years has taken a very keen interest in the Young Helpers' League movement in Geraldine, intends holding a "shop" day nest week.
