PERSONAL. (SPEdAi TO THE PBESS.) GEEYMOUTH, November 2S. • Mr D. B. Muir, of Temuka, is visiting Greymouth. Mr and Mrs T. E. Y. Seddon left this morning by motor for Christchurch. Mr E. A. Home, who has been visiting Greymouth, will return to-morrow to Christchurch. Mr H. A. Penn, District Traffic Manager for Canterbury and Westland Kailways, and Mr J. McNair, District Engineer, arrived from Christehur«h last evening, and after visiting Eeefton will return on Saturday. Mr J. A. Eedpath, of Christchurch, arrived in Eeefton last night. Dr, D. J. Booth (Kumara) is on holiday in Wellington. Dr. W. McKay, from Greymouth, is acting as locum tenens. The Hon. Mr Mclntyre, M.L.C., arrived this evening from Westport, and proceeds via Christchurch to Wellington, to attend the opening of Parliament on Tuesday. Mr W. Lowden, of Eeefton, has been appointed manager of the Cascade Coal Mine, at Westport, in place of Mr A. Whittlestone, resigned. Mr Lowden was formerly at Millerton and Stockton Mines, and for the past six years has been at the Ferndale mine, Eeefton. Kumara Water Supply. The"Kumara Borough Council is considering a water supply scheme for residents. Mr James Eochford, late manager of Government Water Eaces, is engaged taking levels preparatory to presenting a report on the scheme. The Unemployed. Eleven men and one woman are registered on the books at the Labour Bureau as unemployed in Greymouth. The number of unemployed enquiring at the Labour Bureau is practically the same as three months ago. Wiremen's Examinations. Of those who presented themselves for the electrical wiremen's examination at Greymouth in September all (nine) failed in the written examination, and one out of five, G. H. Martyn, passed in the practical examination. Eclipse of Moon. Owing to the overcast condition of the sky last evening, no good views of the eclipse of the moon were secured, though enthusiasts watched the sky till past 11 o'clock. The eclipse was visible at Eeefton at intervals, the sky being cloudy. Bankruptcy Meeting. At the meeting of creditors of John Hilman Lindbom and Thomas Francis McGuire, sawmillers, Kumaka, bankrupts' statement disclosed a deficiency of £BB4 6s. Debts to unsecured creditors amounted to £209 6s and to secured creditors £1205 5s 7d (less estimated value of security, £530, leaving a debit of £675 5s 7d), the total liabilities being £1414 6s Id and the total assetß £530. The secured creditor is the Eiccarton Timber Co., Ltd., Christchurch, the debt to them being £1205 5s 7d, and the estimated value of the security £530. Bankrupts said they were victims of the prevailing timber slump on the West Coast, and closed their mill;a»d to work at other mills till times improved. Meanwhile the mortgagees, the Eiccarton Timber Co., arranged to self" the property as a. going concern to a man named John Symes, who failed to complete his bargain, and bankrupts decided ther to file. No quorum was prdsent, and after an informal discussion the Deputy Offiical Assignee closed the meeting. School at Hukarere. The Minister for Education has advis-r ed Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., regarding, the request of the residents of Hukarere for a . school, that the chairman Of the Nelson Board would visit Hukarere about November 30th, and make an inspection and report to him on the subject. University Students. A party of University students from Otago intend visiting the Bed Hill country, beyond Jackson's Bay, South Westland, in January, under Professor Turner, for the purpose of collecting mineral specimens. Football Successes. To mark its successes on the field last season the Blaketown Football Club held a high tea last evening. Mr A. A. Adams, president of .the West Coast Eugby Union, preshented the captain of the Club, Mr F. McEnaney, with the trophies won during the season, which were the Hannan, Russel, and Saraty cups, and the Eugby Union shield. He congratulated the club on the fine spirit both on and off the field of its members. •' Pakeha Lands. Speaking last evening at the Bullor Chamber of Commerce in reference to pakeha lands, Professor Easterfield, director of the Cawthron Institute, statett that he was not yet able to say what the cost of bringing pakeha land to agricultural condition would be, but, tne time was not far distant when they would have dairy farms on these lands. He exhibited several photographs ot reclaimed pakeha land showing the results from various methods of treatment, some sections showing a prolific growm of grasses and clover.
