ADDINGTON MARKET.
RECORD MUTTON ENTRY. GOOD BEEF SALE. (BY OCa COHMESCUI, 1DIT0B.) Yesterday's yarding of fat sheep was about a record for a weekly sale, its jiumbers being exceeded on one or two occasions only, when a double market was held. In other secticna average entries ruled. The Bale throughout was a good one, though naturally the over-supply ox mutton met with lower values. Fat lambs 3old briskly with little, difference per head from last week but the lambs are finishing off well ana per lb prices were a shade lower. There was soma opinion at the sale that freezing values when the works open in ten days or ao will only be a degree lees than those ruling yesterday. Store sheep gold with exceptional briskness, the good rain of tho preceding night, which appears to have been lairly general, banishing tho caution that has marked the last few sales. Forward wethers were in keen request and Bold relatively better than similar sheep in the fat pens. Fat cattle sold unevenly with improvements in most classes on the preceding week, and on the other hand occasional decreases. On ihe whole, however, the tendency wa3 towards an advance and the laat few pens of the offering sold briskly. Some good sorts of young cattle sold well in the store pens, any lines of even colours being eagerly sought after. Porkers continue in over-supply and values were again disappointing. The fine day drew a large attendance of farmers, most of whom focused their attention on the store sheep and fat lamb sale. The mutton sale did not conclude until 8 o'clock.
STORE SHEEP. The entry in tho store sheep pens was a little larger than a week ago and consisted of fairly even proportions of ewes and lambs and dry- sheep. The sale for all classes was a good one. It opened soundly, on about the same basis as last week, the bigger volume of competition making for a healthy tone. With the ample feed about, farmers appeared to be a little bit more liberal in their ideas of values, and were keen to make purchases. Though the market was very firm, prices for ihe most of the entry showed very littla advance, except in one or.two cases where better class ewes and lambs and wethers offered. Apart from an odd pen or two, there • was little in the way' of quality shown. In the majority of cases the ewes were on the old side, and the lambs in many instances were, small and unevenly grown. The dry sheep were all shorn, and sold very firmly at full recent rales. The yarding was augmented by seyoral pens of Chatham Island wethers, the first draft from that quarter for some time. The best of them mada up to'29s. Values were: Good ewes and lambs 23s to 253 3d, Ordinary owes and lambs, 19s to 223 3d. Inferior ewes and lambs, 16s to 18s 6d. FAT SHEEP. The.heaviest entry for years for an ordinary sale, over 15 races, the bulk of them well filled, being offered.'' All but a few pens of sheop were out of the wool. Ewes formed about half of the entry, and the most of them were in prime condition.
Quality, indeed of the' whole entry considering its size, was very good. Medium to light wethers were numerous, but there was little badly finished stuOf penned. The first draft of the season Jrom Chatham Islands was forward, and as usual good lir.es of South Canterbury sheep were penned. There was a good sale throughout, but at reduced prices, averaging for light wethers up to 2s 64 for owes and heavy wethers about 3s, and for heavy ewes' up to -is. A. good deal of wether mutton was selling about, Gd to 6Jd ewe being a penny to a penny halfpenny cncipor. These prices are Eomowhat in excess of what it is expected will rule for export when the works open, and this factor no doußt will draw heavy entries from now on. Yesterday one of the export representatives bought heavily, possibly for the local trad.?. Towards the end of the long sale, lighter wethers held values well, but heavy ewes slipped back further.
