ROWING.

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION,

The Canterbury Rowing Association. met last night. Present: Messrs F. D. Kesteven (in the chair), W. Duggan, A. E; Nightingale, W. S. Godfrey, G. 11. Hobbs, F. L. Booth, A. T. Evans, H. H. Berry, W. L. Whittington, R. Moore, and R. J. Hobbs (hon. secretary). A letter was received from the Akaroa ;Regatta Club enclosing a provisional programme and list of officials for a regatta on January Ist, the programme being tho same as for last year. The letter stated that the question of holding the regatta at the same time as the Sanders Cup contest had been considered impracticable. The programme was approved. The; New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association wrote advising that the. championship regatta had been' allocated to Marlborough. and. the :interprovincinl champion-, ship eights to Canterbury. The course would be from Governor's Bay to Corsair Bay. Invitations to' send crews to New South* Wales and Weßt Australia had not been ac-. cepted, but it was possible that/ if the New. South Wales Association , extended an' invi-. tation to a sculler instead of an eight, a,' sculler might be sent. . The secretary reported €bat repairs to the dam had been effected and the river was in good ordor. ' .

The" opinion' was expressed that since the river-sweeper had been ovor the river a. much greater extent of water was affected by the tides, this improving conditions for rowing considerably. Considerable discussion arose as .to the .adjttlfftbility of holding, a ' 'head of the'river'' competition this- year, as was done in 1926. Mr Duggan said that the competition had; been a great success in 1926, and had been very popular with, the public. On the motion of Mr Whittington it was. decided to-hold the competition this season, and a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs R. J. Hobbs, A. T. Evans, and W.. Duggan, was set up to arrange tho competition; ■ It was decided to send a message' 6? con-' gratulatipn to the Wanganui Rowing ; Clab on its winning the Stewart Challenge Cup ; for fours in Australia.
