THE CONTEST IN HURUNUI.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PBES3. Sir,—A study of the. position in Hurunui' leads one to believe that this contest will be one of the most interesting fights in the North Canterbury district. \t the last election the Reform candidate polled 3178 votes and Mr Forbes, the Liberal candidate, poled 3989 votes, giving htm' a majority of 811. Now tha change of boundaries, however, has resulted in all the polling booths north of the Conway being cut out of this electorate, and in this-district Mr Forbes had a majority of 370 votes oyer his opponent. The new districts which nave come into the electorate from Kaiapoi show that the Reform candidate had a small majority over his opponent* At the last election also there was no Labour candidate, and though it is not anticipated that Mr Turley, "the present Labour candidate. will poll very many votes, still, his entry into the contest will certainly have an effect on the result. Mr L. R. C.- Macfarlane has been putting in some very active campaigning and has visited every part of the electorate. As one who served under him during the Great 'War, I know him as a white man; and I would not be at all surprised to see him head the poll on election day. Mr Forbes has represented this constituency for many years, but owing to the fact that he was not elected as Leader of the United Party, many people who supported him at the last election are not at all enthusiastic this time about his chanco of success.—Yours, etc., DIGGER.
