(Received November Bth, 5.5 p.m.) I RUGBY, Novembe? 8. j A question was asked in it® Hotls& of Commons as to what action , ijhe Government was taking With the Portuguese Government regarding the delay which had taken place in fioldihg the trial of Mr Brewer, second officer Of the steamship Clan Lamont, on a charge Of theft at Loiutu Bay, Portdgues& West Africa, and regarding the Wvefity Of his sentence,' which ■ was 860 days imprisonment and & fine of £l7, of a farther 60 days' imprisonment. . . Mr G. Locker-Lampson, Under-Seo-tetary for Foreign Affairs, replied that the British Ambassador at London had addressed strong representations to the Portuguese Government on .November 3rd. The Portuguese Government promised immediate investigation by tele-, graph. Mr Locker-Lampson added that as Mr Brewer, after the first dava following his arrest, was detained at the local hospital; whefe he enjoyed considefable freedom, there was no caus© for complttiiit regfitjE'ditig the coitditions of his incarceration.
