DEADLOCK ENDS.
UNION WILL MAN THE WAIKOUAITI. The Union Steam Ship Company has been advised by the Seamen's Union that it is prepared to find a crew for the steamer Waikouaiti to-morrow. The decision brings to an end a deadlock which has existed since September 20th, and which resulted in the Waikouaiti being tied up at Lyttelton. It does not mean, however, that the vessel will immediately go into her. running again. The owners, having been compelled to make other arrangements for carrying on tho trade that should havo been catered for by the Waikouaiti, aro now in the position of having to find work for the vessel to do. • "Of course, we aro pleased that the trouble lias been settled, but we regret there is no work for the Waikouaiti to take up at present," said the Christchurch manager of the Union Company (Mr Rudd) yesterday morning. He said that when the Waikouait was tied up the Kawatiri was put on to take up her running, and there did not seem, therefore, any work that the Waikouaiti could take up. "We do not know at the moment," said Mr Itudd, "that we will be able to Find work for the ship and her crew " That, he added, was a matter that the men did not think of when they refused to man the boat. The action of the men compelled the owners to make other arrangements for carrying on the trade and the result was that the Waikouaiti was left without work.
