UNEMPLOYMENT.
POSITION SLIGHTLY EASIER.
It was reported at yesterday's meeting of the executive of the Citizens' Unemployment Committee that the position is somewhat easier. The Labour Department's figures showed that the total unemployed numbered 495; of these 330 were married, with dependents ; 165 were single; 407 were fit for heavy work, and 88 for light work. During the week 36 were placed in private work; 67 on local bodies' works; 10 on public works, and 25 on State Forest Service works; total, 136. Work in view for the present week: Public works 13, State Forest Service 25; total 38,. Yesterday's registrations numbered 35 and included registrations by 25 married men. At the Central Relief Depot, tip to noon on Saturday, 1315 applications had been dealt with. Some difficulty is being experienced in dealing with cases of' single men and women, deserving but destitute, who ' ask for sufficient to pay for a night's lodging. Two or three such cases have cropped up recently, and, though monejr was found for the purpose, those in charge of the Central Relief Depot have no fund specially earmarked for granting relief 6f this nature. It is suggested that some of the citizens who contribute to the Unemployment Fund might feel inclined to subscribe to a special fund of the nature indicated.
