NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The monthly meeting of the United Band of Hope was held in the Templar Hall on Saturday. Mr C. E. Thwaites presided. A programme of instrumental, vocal, and elocutionary items, and company songs was given by young people from the Salvation Army* and Baptist Sunday School. Captani" Vince relieving officer of the Salvation Army', gave an address.

At the monthly meeting of the 1 W.C.T.U., Mrs Thwaites presided. The Scientific Temperance Reading, bv Mrs H. Taylor, dealt with the disuse "of alcohol by athletes. An interesting paper on the life of T. E. Taylor was read by the secretary. In order to increase 1 the membership, it was decided to obtain a speaker for next meeting, and 1 to ask each member to bring a friend \ who might be willing to join the Union. Estelle Taylor and Antonio Moreno play together in "The Whip Woman," tho picture to bo presented at B% Tery- : body's, Town Hall, this evening. This is an unusual drama of post-war Hungary. On Thursday the film version of that famous musical play, "The Merry Widow," will be shown, with Mae Murray and John Gilbert in the leads. On Saturday, Norma Shearer in that bright and piquant comedy drama, "The Latest Prom Paris," will be presented. Box plans are at the Bristol and day sales are at the Golden Gate. HANMER SPRINGS. A children's afternoon in aid of Dr. Barnado's Homes was held last Friday. A very enjoyable time was spent in games, dancing, and songs. Medals were presented to Miss Jean Dynes and Master A. Shirley. The music was supplied by Mrs G. Stevenson and Messrs Hopkins and Molloy. The Rev. J. Gemmell addressed the gathering, explaining the objects, etc., of Dr. Barnado's Homes A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Dodds (president) and the committee. The Hanmer Ladies' Hockey team motored to Rotherham to play in the final of the Mt. Palm Shield competition on Saturday. Rotherham won by one goal (shot by Miss Walker) to nil. Mr Moor was referee. The quarterly meeting of the Domain Board was held on Friday evening. Present: —Messrs G. 0. Rutherford (chairman), J. Ashton, G. B. Hickman, C. Lalimert, and P. McManaway. of absence was granted to Mr J. Manson and Mr G. Lucas. Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., advised that the Minister jfor Lands had approved a grant of £6O to the Domain funds. It was decided to endeavour to have this grant increased and that a public meeting be called in the near future to go into the question of raising funds for further improvements. It was decided that a letter of appreciation be sent I to Mr J. Chapman, of Waiau, for I the manner in which ne carried out his 1 contract with the Board. Messrs Ashj ton, Hickman, and McManaway were appointed a by-laws committee. The H.inmer football tea motored to Waikari on Saturday. The result was a win for Waikari of 11 points to 3. j The Golf Club played a bogey match during the week-end, the best cards returned were:—H. J. Peek, all squai-e; Mrs W. T. Williams, one down; A. Reid and D. Milliken, each 4 down. ROTHERHAM. The last match in the second round of the Mt Palm Shield Hockey Competition, iWas played, on Saturday, when Hantilef met Rotherham on the Rotherham Domain. The game resulted in a win for Rotherham by one goal to nil. Mr C. T. Moor was referee. LEITHFIELD. Tlie Kaiapoi Senior B team of basketballers were defeated by Leithfield on Saturday by 9 points to 7. Miss Mander was referee. ' ■ ■ A large area of lupin has been cleared at the beach with a view to leasing building sections to likely tenants. CUST. On Saturday afternoon the Cust School Old Girls' basketball team, tried conclusions with a team representing Clarkville. After a very good game Cust were victorious by 12 points to 10. The local football team played Amberley on the home ground on Saturday afternoon. A good, o{>en game saw the visitors win by o points (two potted goals) to 6 (a converted try). Mr Lindsay was referee. BURNHAM. In conjunction with the Wesley Guild's social, the farmers of the district and friends of Mr T. McClelland and family, who are leaving Burnham, joined in a very pleasant evening for the purpose of showing their appreciaion of the McClellands and to wish them the best of luck in their new surroundings. A short programme of musical items, intermingled with competitions and a dialogue, was presented. On behalf of the residents of the district, Mr A. Newton presented Mr and Mrs McClelland with a travelling rug, as a token of esteem, and wished them every success in their new sphere. The presents for the two boys, he said, had not arrived, but they had not been forgotten, and would receive them ( later. Other speakers were Messrs Tweed, Mallard, Cronin, Cooper, flooper, and Moyle.

MARSHLAND. The weather during the paet fortnight has been very fine, consequently work oil the land is being pushed ahead. Onion growers are nearly ready to begin sowing and the next fortnight should see & large area down. At the last meeting of the Hall Committee reports were received of the old timers' social. The chairman reported that everything was well in hand and the function promised to be the largest ever held in the district.

WEST MELTON. The twelfth shoot of the season was held on Saturday evening. A trophy given by the club was won by L. McIlraith, R. Northcott being runner-up. The Tisdall was won by A. Hulston with 69. For the previous week a trophy given by Mr J. Simms was won by S. "Walker. The Tisdall Button for the same week was won by W. Oakley, jmi., with 68.

KIRWEE. A Bugby match was played in the Domain on Saturday between the Courtenay and Greendale Foresters' Courts, and resulted in a win for the local Court by 16 points to 8. M. Wilson (2), J. Seaton, and C. Johnston scored for the winners, and M. Wilson and 0. Wilson each kicked a goal. For the losers, J. Meikle kicked a penalty go rt, and J.
