£2OOO GIFT.
CANTERBURY COLLEGE BENEFITS. PROFESSOR W. P. EVANS'S generosity. A gift of £2OOO has been made to Canterbury College by Professor W. P. Evans, now of Wellington, and for many years Professor of Chemistry at the College. This will carry a Government grant, and the £4OOO will be used to establish two scholarships for the study of science, to be awarded to the most promising science student at Nelson College in alternate years and tenable at Canterbury College for four years. Professor Evans is an old boy of Nelson College and Emeritus Professor of Canterbury College. He has chosen this means to benefit two educational institutions with which he is so prominently associated. The benefaction was received with great enthusiasm at yesterday's meeting of the College Board of Governors. In making the announcement, the chairman (Mr H. D. Acland), said that he feltv the gift would be of the greatest benefit to the' College. The Professor had generously left many of the conditions open, so that the Board could have its say. The effect of the gift would be that, every two years, the most brilliant science scholar at Nelson College would come to Canterbury College. _ "No oD6 is in & better position to value the educational advantages at Canterbury. College than Professor Evans," said Dr. J. Hight. "He has been first a student at the College, then a graduate,*' then a Professor. Dr. Higbt hoped the lead given might be followed by others. Colonel Smith thought the terms of the gift were very pleasing. Professor H. 6. Denham, who filled the position of Professor Evans on the latter'B retirement, said he was particularly struck by the width of the field which the gift covered. It had been left open to all branches of the science students. He had been consulted about the terms of the gift and knew the breadth of vision which promptod Professor Evans to make it. The Board received the gift with acclamation, and it was resolved to express the deepest gratitude to the aonor.
