RUMOUR DENIED.
MR HAWKEN WILL STAND FOR EGMONT. [THE PEESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, June 21. A rumour which has been widely circulated in the Taranaki district, and has gone still further afield, to the effect that the Hon. Mr Hawken (Minister for Agriculture), the sitting member for Egmont, may transfer, at the coming General Election to Pate a electorate, is emphatically denied by "i have never thought for a moment of contesting any other constituency but that which I represent at present, declared Mr Hawken to-day. lam at a loss to understand how the statement originated. The rumour has not the slightest, .foundation. Egmont lias al\yays been loyal to me, and has given me additional support at each successive General Election, I have no intention whatever of turning . Egmont down". Disloyalty to friends or rarty does not suit my constitution.
MID-CANTERBURY SEAT. ' \ ■■ Mr Jer. Connolly, Rakaia, who contested the Ellesmere seat at the last General Election in the interest of the National Party, has been approached by various interests in the newlyformed Mid-Canterbury electorate again to represent .that Party at the forthcoming election. He has not yet decided whether he will accede to the request.
