WAIMATE.

FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' SPORTS. In connexion with the United friendly Societies' sports to be held on Easter Saturday, a meeting of the Council was held to further the arrangements. The Rev. I'ather Knight and Dr. R. G. Shacklcton wrote accepting office as patrons, and enclosing donations. Mr D. D. McDonald (Dunedin) advised that he would be unable to act as judge of the piping and dancing competitions, and the president and secretary were empowered to procure a judge. Mr C. D. Fleming also wrote stating that he would be unable to officiate as a handicapper. Queen Carnival. Enthusiasm is now being evinced in the forthcoming queen carnival to be held in the interests of the Plunket Society, Rugby Union, and United Friendly Societies. The respective queen candidates have now been announced as follows: —Friendly Societies, Miss Eva Dunlop; Rugby Union, Miss Mabel Eddy; and Plunket Society, Nurse McKee. A princess competition is being held separately by the various football clubs and lodges in support of the Rugby Union and Friei'dlv Societies queen candidates respectively.

Personal. The Rev. J. H. Haslam, who was called to Auckland owing to an accident suffered by his mother, has returned to Waimate.

Miss Wilce, of Christchureh, is visiting Waimate, and is staying with her mother, Mrs F. Wile? (Rhodes street).

A. and P. Association. At a meeting of the committee of the A. and P. Association, Mr J. C. Huy presided. Messrs Norton Francis (Christchurch) and C. F. d'Auvergne (Christchurch), former presidents of Hip Association, wrote agreeing to accede to the Association's request that they present enlargements of themselves for hanging in the Association 's gallery of past presidents. Miss I. Eut.hpT.ford win*" a cup for the light horse jumping class at the Show, to replace tl - cup won outright by her in that section. —Accepted with thanks. It was decided to accede to the request Of the Winter Show Society and to present a cup for the farm section at the show, it being stipulated that the cup be won three Hm"« in succession or four times at intervals before becoming the property of an exhibitor. The resignation of Mr C. T. Kearton was accented with regret. The Association expressed approval of the Eoyal Agricultural Society's proposed regulations in regard to sideshows.

The date of the ram fair was fixed for Tuesday, April 3rd.

FAIRLIE. After the rain of last week (112 points) the. country looks quite refreshed, and quite a good growth can be noticed. There is still a good deal of harvest to be got in. Threshing mills arc now busy, and some very good yields of wheat are reported. The Mackenzie Counties' memorial to its fallen soldiers is now coming nearer to being an accomplished fact. The committee met on Saturday and considered tenders for the work of erecting the memorial. It was decided to accept the tender of Mr J. Mcßride (Timaru), subject to the proposed site being approved by the Public Works Department. It is hoped to have this matter arranged at an early date, so that £ho contractor will be able to got the work put in hand without any delay. The employees of the Fairlie Wool Works held their annual dance in Aorangi Hall on Friday evening. The hall which was tastefully decorated, was comfortably filled, and a very enjoyable evening was spent by all. The weekly half-holiday, which is now to be held on a Saturday, was inaugurated on Saturday last. The late night, which is now Friday, was quite equal to the usual Saturday night, a number of shopkeepers stating that their takings were up to the average.
