FIRES.
SYDENHAM HOUSE DAMAGED. An unoccupied cottage at 44 Madras street, Sydenham, was bad'ly damaged by fire early yesterday morning. The brigade was on the spot shortly after 2 o'clock, but the flames had obtained a good hold, the inside and roof being burnt before the fire was quenched. The house belongs to Mr Fcnwick, who resides at 65 Caledonian road, St. Albans.
HOKITIKA OUTBREAKS. [TB.ZSS ASSOCIATION TELEQBAIt.) HOKITIKA, Marcli 12. There have been three alarms of fire within twelve hours. Shortly after eight o'clock last evening Warren's small sawmill in Gibson Quay, used chiefly for planing and dressing timber, was totally destroyed. The fire had a firm hold when discovered and the material, fanned by a breeze, burned freely. The building and plant were destroyed. Two hours later a fire was noticed in Newman's Motors in the upstairs division. The watchman on duty below was reading and noticed nothing unusual. The fire bad a complete hold of the store room, but the brigade made a wonderful save, confining the fire to the seat of the outbreak, and on the whole, comparatively small damage was done, all the cars and buses being quickly rescued without serious injury. " • At 7.30 this morning an alarm of fire was gvien from the Convent, where the laundry was ablaze, caused by a a defective copper. The damage was slight.
