THE "MEAN" SCOTS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PItESS. Sir,—Once more the Scotsman's meanness is evinced. First, a Scotsman in the English City bequeaths an art collection. An appeal to citizens of Christchurch results in one donation of £SOO from a Scotsman. Nothing further resulting, the Scotsman gives the whole amount, £2S,UW, with promise of more. In this morning's leader you tell us: "We have many generous citizens." Pardon my curiosity, but would you kindly mention some of their benefactions P Outside the Mac Lean Institute, the Chalmer Wards to the hospital, the Be Scholarships (£SOOO for journalism) all Scottish. Where are the others." Might 1 suggest that you publish also the list of wonderful benefactions mentioned at the Dunedin Town Hall function recently. It might stimulate the giving impulse of our citizens ana forever rid us of the chean jibes at Scottish meanness.—Yonrs. etc.. ■ PEABCHAR OIG. March 12th, 1928.
TO THE HDITOB OP THE MESS. Sir,—ln reading in this morning s Press of Mr R. E. McDougall's munificent'gift, it, struck me as remarkable that in a City which boasts of its English tradition, almost every- bequest—charitable, educational, social, —has been from a Scot or one of Scottish descent/ One great gift came from a Jew.'. Much the same thing has occurred' in Auckland and in Dunedin expected, of -course, in the latter city —and also in other parts _of New Zealand. I have heard it said that Scots are careful of their {jennies so as to be. generous with their pounds Are the English too "Scotch" ?—Yours, 6tC "' CHRISTCHURCH NATIVE. March'l2th, 1928.
