"NOT WORSHIP, BUT WORK."

MOTTO OP CHURCHGOERS. Jubilee services were held at the Sydenham Methodist Church yesterday, the preacher in the evening being the Hon. Mr Isitt, M.L.C. "Thirty-eight years ago, when I took charge of this church," he said, "it was full every Sunday. I hear that now it is filled only on very special occasions—that the gallery is practically closed. These existing conditions are not confined to this church, or to Methodism, but to the churches throughout New Zealand. Everywhere congregations are smaller and the cause is weaker than 50 years ago.'' Slowly, but surely, the speaker said, people were utterly failing to realise the privileges and duties of a Christian. The Church was not a perambulator, but a manufactory. Those who desired to live a Christian life must make sacrifices, and unless they did so they could do nothing. "Not worship but work," he said, "should be the motto of churchgoers to-dav."
