MANUFACTURERS MEET.
CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. The executive of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association met last night. Present: Messrs A. W. Beaven (chairman), H. Bradley, F. L.' Hutchinson, H. Willis, G. H. Congreve, C. H. Melhuish, C. H. Burson, L. E. Ower, J. W. Thomas, F. W. J. Belton, H. C. S. Stevens, F. T. Boyce, D. Colquhoun, E. E. Archbold, and E. H. Marriner (organiser).
The chairman welcomed new members in Messrs Melhuish, Ower, and Stevens.
Messrs J. A. Frosticfc and D. Colquhoun were elected advisory members. Committees were set up as follows; Finance: Messrs Bradley, 'Burson, Hutchinson, Webb, Duckworth, Belton, and Woolf. Publicity' and Exhibition: Messrs Archbold, Congreve, Willis, Owers, West, Stevens, Colquhoun, W. Thompson, and Hutchinson. Tariff: Messrs Woolf, Hutchinson, Thomas, Melhuish, Edwards, Boyce, Stevens, and Maddren. Emergency: The president and chairmen of committees. It was decided to endorse the recommendation of last year's Finance Committee that the members' subscriptions should be raised to £3 3s for those employing over 50 hands; £2 2s employing over 25 hands; and £1 Is employing under 25 hands; apprentices and females to be calculated on the basis of half the ratio of males. That the profit from the Winter Show and Exhibition be apportioned: £SOO for investment, and £IOO for publicity. The decision regarding the membership fees is subject to confirmation by the quarterly meeting of the Association.
The organiser reported that thirteen manufacturers had been nominated for membership; and one firm which had resigned had withdrawn its resignation. Mr Guinness, Controller of' Government Stores, during a visit to Christchurch, discussed with the organiser machinery for Government workshops, rope and twine contract, basketware for the Post Office Department, wire fencing and nail contract, and enamel name plates. It was recommended that a committee should be set up to formulate a programme of forward work with the view of organising South Canterbury and the West Coast. The Ladies' Committee had sent in details of New Zealand goods that they had been unable to procure in certain shops, and the organiser had discussed the matter with the firms mentioned, who intended to stock the articles asked for in the future.
The recommendation regarding the organising of South Canterbury and the West Coast was referred to the Publicity Committee, and the report was received.
A motion of sympathy with Mr C. E. Otley in connexion with the recent fatal accident was carried.
A proposal to alter the night ; o£ meeting to the second Thursday in the month was lost.
