ADDINGTON MARKET.

HEAVIER ENTRIES.

A SOUND SALE,

(3V OUR COMMEHCIAL EDITOS.) Entries at Addington yesterday iu nearly all classes of stock, were larger, with the exception of fat cattle. Store lambs came forward in very heavy numbers, some vendors, apparently, regarding the current prices as relatively better than those ruling for the fattened article, and are quitting their lambs accordingly. Their judgment is undoubtedly sound, as there will have to be an advance in export prices to provide on yesterday's values 3 margin of profit for fatteners. Though the market opened easier for all but the most forward lambs, it firmed up to last week's values by the end of the sale. Fat sheep comprised a very mediocre lot, and prices eased for all but the priraest sheep. However, values are still ahead of the exporters' schedule of prices, and most of the entry went to the retail trade. Fat lambs sold at practically last week's rates. The fat cattle entry was an unusually small one, and a good advance was recorded. No doubt with the high values ruling for hides and hardening prices for cattle, beef is likely .to be a more profitable branch . of farming than at any time since the slump. A straight line of three-year store steers sold at prices that indicate the general scarcity of feeder cattle. Bacon pigs again sold draggiugly, particularly lor heavy• weights.

STORE SHEEP,

A big increase iu the offering of store sheep took place, tho sale being something in the nature of a store lamb fair. There was a big proportion of halt'breil lambs that had been weaned too young, but several big forward drafts from the Peninsula were good. The West Coast contributed several thousand. At the commencement the sale lacked the vim of last week, but values were only 6d to a shilling a head below those of Wednesday last. When the sale had been going an hour there was a revival. The best of the forward lambs made from 22s 6d_ to 24s 6d. The medium lambs made very high prices, selling from 17s to 19s, and several pens of very plain culls brought 15s to IGs. Ewes and wethers comprised a comparatively small section of the store yarding. There were some exceptionally good pens of two-tooth ewes offered, and these met with a keen demand and a Teady sale at prices that • appear on paper to be dearer than last week. This, however, is accounted for by the fact that yesterday they were particularly classy stuff. Though the balance of the ewe draft attracted a good deal of attention, prices were just a shade easier, if anything, than .last week. Wethers were in short supply, and the offering consisted of uneven sheep which did not meet with a very brisk demand. Passings in all sections were very few, and generally the sale was a very satisfactory one. The range of values was:— Good mixed sex crossbred lambs to 25s 2d. Forward rape lambs, 23s to 24s sd. Medium rape lambs, 20s 5d to 22b lOd. Backward sorts, 15s to 19s 9d. Good four, six, and eight-tooth ewes, 26s 10s to 29s sd. Medium four, six, and eight-tooth ewes, 22s Id to 24s lid. FAT LAMBS. The entry showed a considerable increase on last week, totalling 3150 head, compared with 1850 last week. Some particularly good lines were forward, but the "tail" was prominent. There were several lines from tlie West Coast, one of 222 coming from Murchison (Nelson), a substantial mileage from the railhead at Inangahua. The market showed practically no difference from last week, though the larger entry was reflected in less animation in the bidding. The heavier lambs, however, sold briskly and freely. However, the export trade took most of the average weights. Top price of the sale was for an exceptionally prime" truck lot from W. Hood (Ohertsey), 67 making from 32s Id to 34s lOd. The Murchison - line referred to, sent forward by C. O'Brien, made for the top price 32s Id. Values were:— Extra prime heavy lambs 32s 6d to 34s lOd. Prime lambs 28s to 325. FAT SHEEP. A larger entry, consisting of 11 races, compared with eight last week. The bulk were ewes, and there were not many attractive drafts of either ewes or wethers forward, though, on the other hand, the "tail" end was scarcely so pronounced as at some recent markets. The market showed a slight easing for good sheep, but all other classes were about Is to Is 6d per head down. Exporters, however, except in the case of odd lines of the lighter sheep, found values somewhat ahead of their schedule. The better ewes and wethers were definitely above the export basis, and where the weights conformed with this basis the sheep were not of export quality. The clearance was. a good one. A big line of 121 wethers sold by A. A. Narbey (Long Bay) made from 30s to 35s 4d, and Dalgleish Bros. (Le Bon's Bay) sold a pen of eight ewes at 34s Id.

Values were: — Extra prime wethers, to 35s 4d. Prime wethers, 30a to 32s 6d. Medium wethers, 27s to 29s 6d. Light wethers, 24s 6d to 26s 6d.
