PAPANUI PROGRESS LEAGUE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of * the Papanui Progress League was 1 held in Papanui Buildings last night, Mr W. J. r Boyce presiding over a good attendance of members. The request of the League for an early tram on Sunday mornings was refused. Mr S. H. Cox said that as the trams were a publiojf concern they should be run in the interests of the public. It was also stated that the trams were running to and from • the seaside at least an hour and a quarter before the first tram left Papanui on Sunday mornings. , It was. decided to ask the Council of United Burgesses' Associations to take up the matter.

It was decided to write to the City Council asking work of completing the laying out of the children's playground and the formation of the right-of-way from Belvue avenue to St. James's Park be put in hnnd as soon as possible,. A letter was ' received from ■ the Town Clerk advißing that the North road would receive attention as soon as possible, that permission to erect a hoarding at the corner of Belvue avenue had been refused, and that the blocking of the whole street during sewerage operations was done with the idea o% preventing all traffic being forced on to, a narrow portion of the road, and consequently destroying the surface. A letter was received from the Minister for Railways, -in reply to a request for tho installation of warning signals at the level crossings in the Papanui district. He advised that certain of the crossings in the locality were included in the list to be equipped, and the work would be carried out in due course.

Mr Cdjjc said the Bryndwr bus, which was being run on an extended service along Matson's road on a three months' trial, was not receiving the support it should. This was largely due to the high fares charged. He said the residents greatly appreciated the service, and if the fares were lowered to the same level- as those charged on the tramß, he was Bure the buses would be better patronised. It was decided to write to the Board asking that the cash fare be reduced to 4Jd to Bligh's road, and the concession cards to the extension be 12 rides for four shillings.
