COLLISION AT CROSSING.
ACCIDENTAL DEATH. (PBE33 ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) PALMERSTON NORTH, January 18. An inquest concerning, the death of Andrew Percival Guthrie, the victim of <» railway collision at the Longburn-llongotea road crossing on January 3rd, was held this morning. In evidence, the engine driver, of tho train said he noticed deceased's van running on the road parallel to the line three chains from the crossing. Witness sounded a second alarm whistle. Deceased did not take any notice.-. The van .then turned to cross the line. Deceased had never given any indication of his intention to do so. The train then struck the van. Witness was of the opinion that deceased had a clear view of the line. Another witness said that deceased applied the brakes to his van,. and had on the line when struck by the train. Had the brakes not- beenapplied a collision would not have ensued.
A verdict was returned that deceased was accidentally killed through his van colliding with a train at the crossing. The danger of railway crossings was commented on by the Coroner.
