A CLOSE CALL.

GASWORKS MENACED BY FIRE,

(PRESS ASSOCIiHOK TELEGRAM.)

WANGANUI, January 6.

The Wanganui city gasworks were menaced by fire which broke out late this afternoon. A spark from a railway engine ignited the dry grass in the reserve in which the works stand, and the flames spread to some tar, which burned fiercely, sending up a huge volume of dense black smoke. The city and Castlecliff brigades were called out and managed to keep the ever-spreading flames from reaching the big gas holder. -The damage to property was negligible. One fireman had a foot badly burned by boiling tar.
