MAN AND BOY DROWNED.

WANGANUI, January 5,

The drowning of Claude Mulvaney, married, of Auckland, and Howard Bernard Loft, the nine-year-old son of a Weßtmere resident, formed a tragic end to a picnic party on the river today. Mulvaney and his wife were spending a holiday with the Lofts, and with Mra Loft and the latter's four children went for a holiday outing. The party were bathing when the boy got into difficulties. Though Mulvaney was not a swimmer, he went to his assistance, and both sank out of sight. Two of the other children'also got out of their depth, but were saved by their mother. The bodieß were recovered by the police half an hour later. The boy was found tightly clasped in Mulvaney's arms.
