PUBLIC WORKS.
UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF. It is not at present known whether the Public Works Department intends to proceed with the relief works it is now carrying out or to suspend them until the winter. Before the advent of the holidays there were L'os men employed on reliet works, 64 being on the Lake Sumner road, 30 on the Ball Hut road, 86 on the Parnassus-Waiau road, 16 on the Claverly road, and nine on the Double Hills road. A number of the men engaged took the opportunity offered them to work through the holidays but no returns are available at present to show just how many did so. ! Most of the work on the Lake Sumner road is finished, that remaining yet J to be done being of a class that is best done by horse teams. On the | Parnassus-Waiau road good progress is being maintained, but it will Ire some time before the work can be completed.
It is thought that the Department is waiting to ascertain how much labour will be absorbed by the freezing works_ and harvesting operations before deciding to go ahead with further work to relieve the unemployment situation.
