EMPIRE MARKETING BOARD.

YEAR'S WORK REVIEWED

IBT CA-ZLT,— i\RISS ASSOCIATION-- COPISJOiITj UDSTRAUAN AND N.&. AXD BCJJ CABLI.J

LONDON, December 30,

"It is difficult to detail the extent to which the Empire Marketing Board's operations have benefited sales of Dominions' foodstuffs, but it cannot be denied that its policy has tremendously influenced British consumers, as enquiries of importers, big stores, and small retailers disclose," said an official of the Board in reviewing the year. He continued: "On the research side the Board has allocated £821,000 to institutions in all parts of the Empire, covering tropical and sub-tropical investigations, low temperature horticulture, entomology and mycology, economic botany, animal husbandry, dietetics, poultry marketing, and geophysical surveying. No immediate results of these grants are anticipated, but they have laid down the groundwork, and there are big possibilities for the future.

"Begarding the publicity side, the Board's advertisements in the daily, weekly, and trade newspapers urging the consumption of Empire products cost over £IOO,OOO. The Board has erected 1070 artistic frame hoardings in key positions in 150 cities, on which coloured posters are placed and changed monthly, attractively exhorting the purchase of Empire goods. Fourteen thousand schools requested the Board to place them on the list of recipients of all educational matter issued. Eight Empire exhibitions and thirty-two shopping weeks were held throughout Britain.

"The Board is deputing a special officer to assist local organisers. A hundred thousand window bills were distributed for London's shopping week, and 75 lecturers, touring Britain and North Ireland, delivered 785 lectures at cinemas, public halls, and political and social clubs and organisations, at which the average attendance was 250."
