AN INTERESTING

DISCLOSURE.

ADMIRALTY'S INNOVATION

IFT CiSLS—FRESS ASSOCIATION— COrIRIGHT.) (AVSTKALIAX A>D H.S. CABLE ASSOCIATION.,

(Received January 2nd, 7 p.m.)

LONDON, January 1

It appears that the news that submarines were carrying aeroplanes leaked out by mistake through a "roil tape'' regulation concerning tho publication of the rates of naval pay. The Admiralty had been taking extraordinary pains to keep tho secret, and naturally refuses further information. The only comment in official circles 13 that contained in tho London "Gazette," which says the disclosure is most unfortunate and ill-timed.

ANNOUNCEMENT A SURPRISE.

EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED IN SECRECY. (Sydsjet "Sun" Service.) (Received January 2nd, 7 p.m.) LONDON, December 31. The announcement that 2s extra a day, starting from June last, will be paid to qualified fleet air pilots and naval observer officers appointed to submarines carrying aircraft lias surprised naval circles, which had for a long time known that experiments were being made with submarines capable of carrying aircraft. However, the experiments were regarded as in the "hush-hush" category, and it was not expected that the Admiralty would reveal this more or less secret activity, as the experiments are not yet finished. It is a difficult problem owing to the limited space to accommodate aircraft, but great progress has been made in this connexion. Other navies are engaged in similar experiments, leading to greater doubts as to the expediency of revealing what Britain is doing.
