HANNAN DECIDES TO RETIRE. [THE TBESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON. November 28. Pat Hannan, professional sculler, who has been advised by his doctor to give, up rowing for a year, stated to-day that he had decided to retire from the sport definitely. Hannan is in his 44th year, and >s the present professional champion of New Zealand. Hannan won the Parramatta Handicap in 1913 against a big field, which included such famous scullers as Arnst, Towns, Matheson, and Pearce. In 1915 be won the New Zealand championship from W. Webb on the Wanganui river. Since then he has held the championship almost continuously. He has beaten in turn W. Fogwell, Jumbo Wells, Alf Felton, W. McDermott, R. Arnst, and Darcy Hadfield. Once he was beaten decisively by Arnst, and three years ago he was beaten by Major Goodsell, the present world's champion, on the Parramatta.
