SELWYN PLANTATIONS.
MEETING OF THE BOARD. At yesterday's meeting of the Selwya Plantations Board, the superintendent report' ed that during the month fifty cords of gum were cut and stacked at Turnbull's plantation, whilst at Darfleld and Sandy Knolls about fifteen cords of firewood and 500 stakes were cut and:disposed of. Milling operations were being earned on at Darfleld, where 40,000 superficial feet.of pine weremilled on a royalty basis. - Paring the gale many large pines were uprooted, and they wero being converted into milling lengths. The season's transplantation showed an excellent growing percentage. Weed growth was fairly strong owing to tbe prevalence of showery weather. Sparrows were unusually troublesome to the seed-beds this year, although the laying of poisoned grain bad had a good effect.' A further sowing > of tree seeds was conducted under good conditions. S*«ds sown several weeks ago were germinating ex-' cellently, but more sunshine was needed for the development of sturdy plants. Every effort would be made to forbid the entry into the plantations of shooting parties, a practice bo popular, yet dangerous, in past years. In co-operation with the Government Entomologist, Mr D. Millar, a colony of gum tree weevil parasites was liberated in the affected, area at Page's plantations, wherein the strong, stringy barks were being partially defoliated by the increasing pest. There were present: Messrs W. Stewart (chairman), R. Nairn, H. A; Millar, 0. H. Adams, J. Stony, W. P. Spencer, G. Scott, and C. Wolfe.
