ANGLING NOTES.

(BT "CREEL. - ') Fishing is good for the soul of man and each succeeding year finds a greater number of professional men looking to the great sport of fishing—"Akron."

The Halswell still yields good bags. Last week catches of individual anglers for one night's fishing ranged from five to nineteen fish, all averaging about five pounds per fish. The Lower Selwvn provides good results also, and most anglers were well rewarded last week-end. Anglers who visited Lake Lyndon last week-end report the lake in good order, and fish full of fight. Although no exceptionally big catches were recorded, a good number of fish wera caught. When fishing with the floating worm wade quietly into the Water; or, it preferring terra firma, keep as much as possible out of sight of the fish. Ihe worm in all cases should be cast up stream, and allowed to drift down. Jn striking a fish from this position the hook is much more likely to hold, as the strike is in the lino of the axis ot his bodv; as soon as a fish is hooked, it should be plaved down stream in order not to disturb the water above. The angler swings or casts his worm gently up stream, using as long a line as he can easilv manage, and a low mi? the bait to float clown with the stream, shortening the line by coiling with the left hand and so gather all slack and keep it taut, until the bait is within a short distance of where he is standing, when it should be lifted and re-cast. When using a single hook, if a fish is seen to bite, wait a few seconds, then strike smartly—with "Stewart"' tackle strike as soon as von fee! the fish. While trout fishing in the Mataurn river. Master William Scott secured four fino specimens (reports the '"Mataura Ensign"). The largest tipped the. scales at while another weighed i\\b. The basket totalled lolb in all. "During last week Oamaru anglers whofwero whipping the Waitaki river secured excellent sport. Mr Andrew Thomson, in two days, landed 11 fine trout, and others had most satisfactory catches. The largest fish so far taken is a seven pounder, wliich fell to the line of Mr Alfred Smith. The river is now in good fishing order, and trout up to three pound and four pound in weight are reported to be numerous. Tlie Wyndham Anglers' Club recently conducted a novel competition in the way of an . essay for primary school children, the subject being ''Angling." >{ Shags are reported to be devouring small fish in the Selwyn river. I understand a few anglers fishing the Waimakariri with bully are in the habit of leaving their rods unattended. I would draw their attention to the regulations printed on the license dealing with this matter. Quite a few fish have been taken this week on the fly in the Lower Selwyn in the vicinity of the Spring hole. The Ashley is proving a good stream again for the fly, and although no big fish have as yet been caught, several good catches have been taken during the last few days. The Rakaia and Waimakariri were too .discoloured for fishing at midday vesterday. As the rivers are not high it is quite possible they will be fishablc to-day.
