PLUNKET SOCIETY. In conenxion with the Temuka Business Men's Association's "drive" to raise the sum of 4000 shillings to buy a new ear for the Plunket Nurse, the indicator at the office of the secretary (Mrß. Hughes) shows that 1500 shillings have already been collected or promised. The effort closes when the Plunket Shop will be held on next sale day. It is confidently expected that the required amount will be forthcoming. TMstle Exterminator. In connexion with a QUifornian Thistle exterminating demonstration, which w:»3 conducted by Mr P. E. Needham in a paddock adjacent to the sale yards, the demonstrator intimated that in five days the Californian thistle would be entirely destroyed. The period was up yesterday. A visit disclosed that the foliage "of the plants in a portion of the area was quite dead, and in the other portion well wilted. Influenza. A slight epidemic of influenza has appeared, and both elderly and young persons are sufferers. The Weather. The weather at the beginning of the week was wet, rain falling steadily throughout Monday and Tuesday. Yesterday conditions were somewhat better, although the sky was dull and overcast. The rain is not welcome at present as growth is becoming too rank. The Temuka river is normal, but the Opihi is partly in flood and discoloured. School Committee. The School Committee met on Tuesday evening, there being present: Messrs A. E. Smith, E. Longston, L. G. Scrimshaw, E. Beck, J. Henry, A. W. Buzan, and the secretary, M- Swap. The chairman made feeling reference to the deaths of the late Mrs Caughley and Mrs E. Kingston, and a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives. The Education Board wrote stating that they were making renovations at the headmaster's residence. The Canterbury Methodist Young Women's Class wrote asking for the uso of the building at Easter time. The headmaster, chairman, secretary, and Mr J. Henry were appointed to deal with the application. Mr W. G. Scarlet wrote regarding the accident which happened to his son, and requesting that an effort should be made to prevent a similar mishap occurring. It was agreed to write expressing regret that the accident had taken place, and to state that preventive measures would be taken. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs G. J. Walker, and C. L. Eraser for gifts of cricket material to the school. The headmaster reported that the attendance for the month had been very satisfactory. Personal. Mrs J. Farrell, Factory road, is spending Carnival Week in Christchurch. Mrs Royds, who has been the guest of Miss McCartie, returned to Invercargill on Tuesday. Mr W. Hewson and Mr W. Hewson, jun., are visiting Hanmer. Mrs E. Blackmore left Temuka for Dunedin on Tuesday, where she will spend a few days with her daughter, Mrs R. Smith. Mr and Mrs R. H. Taylor are visiting Christchurch.
