TIMARU.

MAGISTRATE'S COURT. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court took place before Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., yesterday. For cycling on the footpath Leo. Hertnon was fined 10s. Christopher Burns was fined 10s for riding an unlighted cycle a.t night. For using an unlicensed motor-lorry, Simon Grant Mackenzie was fined 20s. The following were each fined 20s for exceeding the speed limit: Frederick Emerson, Jack William Suteliffe, and Gordon T. Mason. Norman Kadcliffe was fined 10s for leaving a motor-car standing unlighted at night. On a similar charge Peter F. McDougall was ordered to pay costs. For failing to comply with the parking regulations, William Young (Mr L. J. O'Connell) was fined 10s. Percy Greaves, charged with breaking and entering the house of Emily Harriet Cole, by day, and stealing two gold rings, valued at £45, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. For failing to send their children to school, W. Newman and D. Burtenshaw were each fined 4s. On a similar charge, M. Christian was fined 10s. Edward Gillespie was remanded to appear at Dunedin on November 16th, on charges of committing forgery by signing a telegram in the name of William Gillespie without authority, and by signing a telegram purporting to be signed by one, Leggett. Defendant consented to an order to be bound over to keep the peace. Judgment was given for plaintiffs with costs, in the following undefended civil cases: Therese, Ltd. v. Percy Stevenson £3 18s Id (claim £9 8s Id); Commissioner of Taxes v. George Henry Hedges £ls 5s lid; Jessie Kelly v. Askin Smith £5; C.F.C.A., Ltd. v. Francis Theodora Aspinall, £3l 2s 6d; Mary Carlton v. F. Weingobt, £5 10s. Robert C. Heron was ordered to pay Soviero Massetti, £7 12s 6d forthwith, in default seven days' imprisonment. Cars Without Lights. "We will allow a car to stand under a street lamp, or a few yards from the lamp without a penalty," said Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., yesterday, when ordering a motorist tj pay costs for leaving his car standing unlighted at night. The Traffic Inspector (Mr C. W. Newcombe) admitted that the car had been left beneath a street -light. His Worship said it was possible that the question would arise us to how far from the lamp the car might be left. ? Land Sale. Athletics. At a meeting of the Y.M.C.A. Athletic Club, it was decided to send a team to compete at the Waimate evening meeting on November 17th. It was reported that the South CanterburyCaledonian Society intended to make arrangements for an athletic meeting to take place when the Australian athletes visit Timaru. The election of officers at the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union resulted as follows:—President, Mr H. H. Eraser; vice-presi-dents, Messrs E. Eodgers, C. Hall, and A. Eain; executive, Messrs J. Henderson (Ashburton), J. Mcllroy (Geraldine), A. Gain (Temuka), and A. McLaughlan (Waimate); auditor, Mr J. B. Stewart; secretary, Mr J. Kennedy. Hospital Board. The South Canterbury Hospital Board met yesterday, Mr E. Mac Donald presiding. The statistical return for October stated that 85 males and 99 females had been treated at the Timaru Hospital and 52 males and 42 females remained in hospital at the end of the month. One male and eight females had been treated at the Fairlie Hospital. The report of the Social Service Committee stated that six new applications for assistance had been granted at a cost of £7 7s 3d. Further temporary assistance had been granted in eleven cases at a cost of £l9 2s 4d for the month. New Premises. It is understood that the Timaru Gas Company intends to erect new premises containing offices, demonstration rooms, and show rooms on the section now used as a right-of-way in Sophia street opposite the Post Office. Caught in a Squall. A rowing boat, containing a coloured seaman from the Tremeadow and a young boy, was caught in a rough sea last evening and those aboard had some difficulty in keeping the craft afloat. They reached the bell buoy, about a mile from shore, and clung to it whilst they tried tj attract the attention of people on the shore. Their plight was noticed by a fisherman, who put out to their assistance in his launch, and the harbourmaster was .lso notified. The fishing launch and the pilot launch raced to the rescue, and the small boat was taken in tow by the fishing launch. The occupants suffered little from their experience, but their position was dangerous when rescued, as a sou'-west wind had sprung up suddenly.
