SWISS CHALET.

FORESTRY LEAGUE'S SHOW EXHIBIT. Visitors to the Show Grounds cannot fail to be impressed with the Swiss Chalet, built of timbers grown in New Zealand, which the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Forestry League have erected as a permanent home for exhibits relating to forestry. The building will be formally opened tomorrow (Friday) by Mr James Deans, a former president of the League; who has just returned from a visit to England, and the continent of Europe. The chalet is built of larch logs provided by the State Fores b Service from its plantations at Hanmer Springs. The logs have been sawn in half lengthways and the bark side is shown outward. The uprights are of macrocarpa. At present the chalet is roofed with malthoid, but will be roofed*with shingles ultimately. The pinus insignis for the doors and roof was provided by the Selwyn Plantation Board.

The exhibits have been provided by the State Forest Service, the School of Forestry, Canterbury College, the Selwyn Plantations Board, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, and other nurseries and organisations interested in forestry. They include log sections of locally grown exotic timbers, planks of the same, cones, seeds, and as many types as possible of forest nursery stock. There will be a large number of potted forest trees and foliage, and certain articles of furniture manufactured locally from New Zealand grown exotics.

The building, which is 45 feet by 26 feet, is not quite completed, but in a few years it is hoped to have matters connected with it _ thoroughly organised, nnd the interior panelled with New Zealand woods. It will be possible then to hang framed photographs relating to forestry on the walls. The School of Forestry will endeavour in the future to provide demonstrations in certain branches of forestry relating to wood-structure, care of seedlings, timber preservation, and such-like matters.
