EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Canterbury-Education Board met yesterday. Present were: Messrs C. S. Thompson (chairman), J. Maze, G. W. Armitage, W H. Winsor, J. G. Gow, E. 11. Andrews, "\V. Johnson, R. Wild, and T. Hughes. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs "\V. A. Banks and \V. P. Spencer. The School Medical Officer reported having completely, or partially examined 2156 pupils, interviewed 383 parents, and sent notices to 1640. The nurses had visited 79 schools, had taken 14 pupils personally to the Hospital Dental service, and examined 3391 pupils for medical schedules. Overcrowding. A letter was received from the Phillipstown Committee stressing the necessity of thu Board taking early steps to disestablish the model school in order to relieve the over-crowding in the infant department. It was resolved to inform the committee that (ho Board had interviewed the Director of Education and he .had promised to give the matter early consideration. West Coast. In reply to the Board's application for a grant for the erection of a permanent school in- the district, the Department enquired if the Board had considered whether it would be economical and practical to remove the La. Fontaine School to Evans' Creek. It was resolved to inform the Department that the Board had already considered the proposal, but owing to the age and condition of the La Fontaine school it had been decided to take no action in this direction. New Eangiora- School. Correspondence was received from the Department intimating that during the present financial year it would not be possible for it to find sufficient money to replace both the infant and the main school 'at Kangiora, and that it therefore proposed to confine itself to the. erection of. an open-air tvpe of infant school and to the replacement of the out-office"' accommodation during this financial year. ' It/was resolved to reply that the Board was in agreement with the Department's proposal to erect the infant school this year and the main school in 1.928.- It was further resolved to recommend the acceptance of the Department's No. 4 plan of a fresh air tvpe of building—with enclosed corridor a?" suggested-by-the Board—provided that the replacement of the main school is not endangered. Gcraldine School.
A report was received in regard to the necessity for providing additions for the secondary department of the Geraldine School and extending the site. A letter wa3 also received from the committee urging the Board to use every endeavour to secure additional playing space for the school. On'the recommendation of Messrs Armitage and Hughes, it was resolved to support the committee's, application "to the Department for'a grant to purchase the whole or part of the section approved by Mr Caughlev and to apolv to the Department for a. grant for the erection of a permanent buildin!; of three rooms for housing the District .High School. . ' . 1
