AUSTRALIAN DISPUTE. * (BT CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT). (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) MELBOURNE, September 21. The Federal Management Committee of the Seamen's Union has modified the demands contained in their log. The members of the Union adopted a proposal that the committee should agree to negotiate with the employers on the basis of the existing agreement, but on condition that there would be no reduction in wages.
[The original seamen's log demanded big increases in Avages, increased overtime rates, and a 44-hour "week. The secretary of the New South Wales Inter-State Steamship Owners' Association stated that the demands would involve an increased cost to the owners of over £1,000,000 a year.]
