STOCK ROUTE.
BETWEEN MARLBOROUGH AND CANTERBURY. At the next meeting of the executive, of the Canterbury Progress League there will be submitted for consideration a "lengthy report from the Marlborough Progress League regarding a stock route to Canterbury. It will be recalled that in March last members of the Canterbury League met members of {he Marlborough League and the'chairman and members of the Amuri County Council at Hanmer Springs and discussed the matter. „ The Marlborough League considers the present route along the East Coast main highways to Parnassus not satisfactory, mainly because it is now extensively used by motorists- and motor services, which traffic is severely hampered by travelling, stock. The route .recommended is via the Awatere Valley, Barefell, Pass, and Acheron Valley, the stages from Blenheim being: (1) Taylor .Pass; (2) old Awatere Accommodation House;, (3) Aotea; (4) Jordan Accommodation House; (5) Camden; (6) Upcot; (7) Castle Creek; (8) Muller; (9). Robin-, son's yards; (10). boundary fence; (11); Guide; (12) Five Mile Creek; -(13); Clarence Accommodation. House;. ('l4) Iron Gate;. (15)- Jollie's Pass; (16) Hannier ' river; (17) Brown's creek; (18) Culverden. Amongst reasons given' in favour of this route are that it is 'almost free from motor or other traffic, and that it is well-grassed almost the' whole "of the way, 'and . the road is not fenced, so that stock can spread out and will travel better and keep in'good condition. The main heights on the route are:—Taylor Saddle, ' 1050 ft; Aotea Saddle, 1500 ft; Upcot, 1750 ft (51 miles from Blenheim); Upcot Saddle, 2600 ft; Muller, 2400 ft. (69 miles from Blenheim); Molesworth, . 2750 ft (77 miles from Blenheim); Earefell Pass, 4250 ft; Guide, 2400 ft; Five Mile Creek, 2230 ft; Clarence, 2150 ft; Jollie's Pass, 2600 ft; and Hanmer Springs, 1150 ft. I It is recommended that suitable trees ! should be planted to provide firewood; and that yards should be provided at the junction of Robinson and Awatere rivers; Boundary. fence; the Guide; the Five Mile; the Iron Gate; and the junction of the Severn and 4- c heron rivers. These yards should each be two acres in extent.
