SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mr W. H. Hagger (Conciliation Commissioner) left for Dunedin yesterday. Magistrate's Court. A sitting of the Timaru Magistrate's Court took place before Messrs A. L. Gee and JT Todd, J.P.'s, yesterday. William McKay, alias Campbell, alias Cameron, was charged that, on. August 3rd, 1927, at Fairlie. lie forged a cheque for £26, purporting to be drawn by Andrew Grant on the Bank of New Zealand, and causing John Craig to act upon it as if it were genuine. He was also charged that, in January, at Christchurch, with intent to defraud, he obtained from Thomas Paynton Reid A# by means'of a valueless cheque for £G; and that 011 August 31st, 1927, at Fairlie, lie forged a cheque for £53 8s Gel, purporting to be drawn by Andrew Grant oil the Bank of New Zealand, Timaru, and, further, knowing the cheque to be forged, caused J. M. Burt to act upon it as if it were genuine. Detective R. J. Walker said that accused had been in the employ of Andrew Grant. One time, when his employer was ill, accused, using Grant's name, had obtained a cheque-book from the Bank of New Zealand, and had forged two cheques. On the first and third charges accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court, Cliristchurch, for sentence. On the second charge he was remanded to appear at Christchurch. Weather. A south-west wind prevailed jestcrday, and rain fell during the greater part of the day. The day was very cold and overcast, although a slight break was experienced in the afternoon, when patches of blue sky became visible at intervals. Bristol Bowling Cup. From time to time the South Canterbury Bowling Centre has discussed the conditions under which the Bristol Cup competition is played, and recently the conditions were slightly altered, but the matter was again before the Centre at a special meeting. The following motion was moved: "That the present system of playing the Bristol Cup bo rescinded arid the following bo substituted: (1) That th# names of rinks bo forwarded to the Centre, and that a ballot be taken so as to decide which rinks will play each other; (2) that jlie club making the greatest number of rink wins be declared the winner." On a vote being taken, however, the motion was lost. General News. The following motion, notice of which has been given, x will be moved at the next meeting of the South Canterbury Bowling Centre: "That the resolution fixing the levies at 3s for country members be rescinded, and the fee be 2s; that a levy be made on South Canterbury representatives playing in home matches; that the Centre ascertain the levy made on town and. country clubs by the Duuediu and the Christchurch Centres."- , Owing to late frosts, the pastures are very short in some of the outlying districts. and slieep and laml>s are finding it difficult to obtain feed. The cereal crops, However, are making good progress and aro looking exceedingly well. Washdyke M.R.C. Tho following wero the highest scores off the rifle at the Washdyke Miniature Rifle Club's last shoot of the season: S. Browne 70, K. Hunt 70, P. Couper, 70, J. King 70, F. E King, 70, A. Kelman 70, W. Grant 69, G. Kelman 69, D. Anderson 69, A. Ross 68, and W. Wood 68. A. Kelman won a trophy presented by Mr S. Browne. W. Wood won a trophy for married men presented by Mrs MeMurchie, and F. King won the trophy for non-prize-winners presented by Miss llae 1 ) Kellahan. S. Browne won the challenge. S. Browne won. the aggregate, dropping five points for 14 shoots, and A. Boss was runner-up, dropping six points for 14 shoots. The challenge trophy was divided between A. Ross and S. Browne. Y.M.C.A. Athletic Club. The annual meeting of the ST.M.C.A. Amateur Athletic Club was held last, evening, Mr C. W. Cameron presiding over a good attendance of members. Office-bearers were elected as follows: —President, Mr H. H. Fraser; secretary, Mr A. D. Mcßae; treasurer, Mr V. Nicholas; assistant secretary, Mr E. Heatherington; general committee, Messrs J. Freeman, J. Delury, R. Hillary, and A. McArthur; ground committee, Messrß J. Freeman, W. Jones, A. McArthur, C. W. Cameron, and C. G. Cliff en; handicappers, Mr E. D. McRae; delegate to Canterbury Amateur Athletic Centre, Mr E. A. Lee. Last year's vice-presidents were re-elected, and the names of Messrs C. W. Cameron and W. G. Tweedie were added to the list.
It was decided that it Uc a recommendation to the committeo that a sub' committee bo set up to arrange training matters.
