HALKETT.
The monthly meeting of the Halkefct branch of the Mothers' Union was held in the Vicarage on Monday afternoon. The president, Mrs W. F. Turner, presided oVer a large attendance. Before proceeding with the usual business, reference was made to the serious illness of the Ilo*v. j\lr .Ivclliuin. vicar of the parish, and a vote of sympathy was passed ,to the vicar, with the hope that he would soon be restored to good health. The president stated that there were present 'two sisters of St. Annes' Home, Christchurcli, and then asked them to address the meeting. The speakers dealt with the general work of the home, and explained the duties 6f the young girls who attended the institution. Both, speakers were accorded a hearty vote of thanks at the conclusion of their addresses.
Despite the inclemency of the weather, there was a large gathering at the social held in-the Halkett School on Tuesday night. ' Tlio room bad been prettily ddcorated with wattle, under the supervision of Mrs Ward. ■During the evening. 'Mr N. Fowler, chairman of the Hnlkett School Committee, toqk the opportunity of making a presentation to Miss J. Thompson, who had played for the socials for a number of years. Mr Fowler said that -he was very sorrv to hear that Miss Thompson was. leaving the district, and said that her place at the piano would bo hard to fill.- He had much pleasure in handing to Miss Thompson a beautiful oak clock, with the wish that her married life would bo happy. Miss L. "Watson, on behalf of the school children also presented Miss Thompson with a bouquet of violets. Mr G. C. Jowers, on behalf of Miss Thompson, briefly returned thanks. Miss L. 'Watson contribued a song. The music for the dance was played by. Mrs R. Henderson, and Misses M. Turner, V. Roper. T. Whyte, and Iris Chambers. Mr N. Fowler was M.C. Light rain fell from the east 011 Sunday morning, point 20 of an inch being recorded by noon A very heavy fog settled over the district on Sunday night, and did not lift till nearly mid-day on Monday For a time the sun shone out. brightly, but the fog again came 011 towards evening. A few showers of rain fell over-night, and in the morning heavy rain fell, and continued off and on al] day on Tuesday. the rainfall for the 24 hours ended 9 p.ill 1 , beinc; 21 points, with rain still falling. There lias been a marked growth in the grass paddocks during the past week, and feed is becoming more plentiful. The past winter has been the worst as regards feed that has been experienced in this district for a number of vcars.
