MANUFACTURERS.
CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. Hie Canterbury Manufacturers' Association met last night, Mr A. . Beuveii presiding. The chairman welcomed to tho meeting Mr J. "W. Collins, secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce. Mr Collins congratulated the Association on the success of its Winter Show and Exhibition, which was one of the most interesting lie had seen. The secretary reported that although he had not yet prepared the financial reports on the Exhibition and Winter Show he could state that the result would be very satisfactory. There would be some profit for each association. Marking Foreign Goods. The Department of Industries and Commerce advised that the first part of the Merchandise Marks Act, l£)2(j, providing that imported goods bearing the name or trade mark of a British manufacturer or trader should not be sold _ unaccompanied by ail indication of origin, came into force o.n .June loth. 1927. This measure had for its object the prevention of palpable dishonesty. There appeared to be a mistaken idea that to comply with the Act all imported goods must bear the name of the country of origin, but an official statement* had made it clear that foreign goods could still lie imported and sold with no mark on them, but the Customs plight refuse to allow them to enter if the' marking tiiey had appeared to indicate British origin. The second part of the Act provided for a statutory committee to holt! public enquiries and report to the Board of Trade as to whether an order should be made, making the marking of certain goods with an indication of origin compulsory.
