Disaffection among the various commanders seeking to fill the post vacated by General Chiang Kai-shek, which has been ripening for weeks, culminated in open hostilities between two battalions at Lunghwa military headquarters on the outskirts of Shanghai. < The outbreak was suppressed after damage had been done to the railways. During the disturbance, the Shang-hai-Hangchow railway was torn- up, disrupting the service. Services on the Shanghai-Nanking railway were also suspended owing to extensive military movements of an obscure nature.
