ELECTRIC HARE.
TO BE INTRODUCED IN N.Z. [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, September 20. Auckland is soon to see the "tin hare," which has so quickly galloped its way into favour in the Old Country and in Australia. With Mr H. R. Mackenzie as chairman, and Messrs AV. J. Rainger and Norman Wade as directors, representing a > powerful' Australian syndicate, a parent company has been formed. Throughout New Zealand subsidiary companies will be formed to carry on the sport in various towns.
So far no site has been chosen for a racecourse, but it is hoped that some central position will soon be secured. At the meetiugs there will be a' race every fifteen minutes and not more than eight dpgs will be entered for each. The animals will wear a colour and a cover as well as a number, so that each will be easily distinguished. A new device recently patented, which will prevent any of the dogs from being hurt, will be used by the company.
Although betting on the events will be illegal—in England the bookmakers are very noticeable —it is expected that the new sport will be well received by the public'. So popular has the pastime become in England and Australia that New Zealanders who have returned declare that when hare, racing is being held the public will flock to it in preference to any horse race Meeting which may fall 011 the same day. As the meetings are held at night, all classes are able to attend.
