WAIMATE.

FARMERS' UNION. Mr A. W. Barnett presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Farmers' Union. • Mr A. W. Hudson, Instructor in Agriculture, wrote agreeing to give a lecture to farmers on a date to be arranged. In response to a request from the' South Canterbury Executive for a contribution towards special expenses, the Union made a grant of £6. In regard to a letter from the Timaru Farmers' Union in reference to the inequitable system of hospital taxation, the Union agreed that nothing would be achieved by bringing the matter forward at the present time.

Mr W. K. Goodson wrote drawing the attention of the Union to the suitability of the la.ncl. of South Canterbury for growing sugar beet, and the desirability for the establishment of such an industry. The meeting decided to leave the matter in the hands' of the president for Investigation. Mr A. E. Wilson signified his willingness to give a lecture before 'farmers, the subject to be "How to Make Poultry Pay." It was decided to hold the lecture in a month's time.

A very interesting article, written F. W. AValters, of Waitoa, and supplied at the request of the local union, was read by the president. The letter dealt with diseases of cows, particularly mammitis, and the writer dealt with the various experiments he had carried out among his large "herd, and the success, which had attended his efforts. The article proved a most instructive one, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Walters for complying with tho Union's request. Southern Pootball Club Dance. As a wind-up to the season the Southern. Football Club held a dance in th© Olympia Hall, tl- re being over one hundred couples present. The large building was artistically decorated for the occasion with the club colours and native greener}. The floor was in good order, and the musie was supplied by Mrs Mansel's orchestra. Extras were played by Misses O'Malley and Brownlie. Mr Oswald Ijtudd carried out the duties of master, of ceremonies. School Football. A football match played at Ikawai School ground between Arno and Ikawai Schools resulted in a win for Ikawai by 33 points to nil. M. Cochrane scored four tries and converted three and 0. Balfour, scored two tries, both of which he converted, and G. Hamilton scored and converted one try. Mr E. Turnbull controlled the game. Out of seven tries scored, six were converted. W.C.T.u. Mrs J. Clarke presided over the monthly meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. The president and secretary of the Willard Home appealed for help, and it was decided to hold a sale in October to raise funds for this, and other purposes.

Mrs E. B. Hurst spoke on the problem of increasing the membership and the Rev. W. F. Nicholl addressed the meeting, this subject being 4 4 The Bible in Relation to the Modern Temperance Movement."-

The speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks at the conclusion.

Mr Alan Shearer presided over tho meeting of the Y Branch, there being a good attendance, and a very instructive address was delivered, the lecturer being cordially thanked. Personal. The Rev. C. H. Lowden, Waihao Downs, who is at present in Dunedin, has been confined to his bed, and will be unable to return to his duties for a week or two. Mrs Lowden is also in Dunedin, whither she was called owing to the serious illness of her mother. Mr J. McKenzie, of Oamaru, is visit-i ing Waimate, and is staying with his daughter, Mrs J. H. Beattie, Harris street. Mesdames A. Roy and A. M. O'Brien and Miss-Elliott, who have been in Ashburton, where they attended the W.C.T.U. Conference,, have returned home. " Mrs F. Bastings has returned to Waimate, after a lengthy holiday spent in Australia. * • Nurse McKee, Plunket Nurse at Waimate, has returned- after an extensive tour of the South Sea Islands. Rifle Shooting. The two-night shoot for Mr W. Medlicott's trophies, fired by the Hook Miniature Eiflo Club resulted in nine riflemen tieing (with their handicaps). After the shoot of W. Bell and C. Alexander proved the winners. The best scores off the rifle were: E, Meyer 35, G. Wilson 35, W, Uempscy 34, J. Medlicott S3, W. Bell 33, J. Haynes 33, F. Medlicott 33, 0. Eose 33, H. Holland 33, E. Campbell 32, C. Alexander 32. G. Wilson won the button.

J. McCulloch was the only rifleman to register a possible at the Glenavy Club's shoot. Other scores off the rifle were:—N. Gibson 34, D. McCulloch 34, J. H. .Jackson 34, W. Dickson 34 c! Cameron 33 D. Keyes 33 A. Bishop 33, A. Kerniclc 33, W. Duc'kett 33, E. Segar 32, G. Bird 31, G. Jones 31, H. McArthur 31, S. Malthus 31. E. Cameron won the button in the shoot off.

E. Tavendale and I. Thomas registered possibles off the rifles at the Arno Club's shoot. Other good scores were* C. Olorehshaw 3-', M. Horraek 34, 0 Riddle 34, G. Thomar 34, A. Craig 34 J. The Hunter Club fired the first round for Mr J. Bitchener's trophy. H. Trezise and J. McFarlane both registered possibles off the rifle, and in the shootoff for the button, Trezise proved the winner.
