RICCARTON BOROUGH.
. J) MEETING OF COUNCIL. • The Riccarton Borough Council met last night. Present were: The Mayor (Mr H. Manhire), and Crs R. G. Malcolmson, T. M. Ford, H. Gudsell, H. Telford, R. Hepburn, L. Ormandy, J. F. Peters, and E. 11. Rankin The Mayor referred to tho fact that the Council had at last been successful in' obtaining a grant from the Main Highways Board towards the maintenance of Riccarton road. This was satisfactory, but they must' still keep battling to have the road declared a main highway. Tiio By-laws Committee reported thai twelve domes were being manufactured, to be used for trial purposes at intersections. Consideration of an entrance to Dean's Bush being made on the western side was deferred until the next financial year. Crs. Rankin, Malcolmson, and Ormandy were appointed a deputation to wait on the Drainage Board and ask for its co-operation in adopting a block system for tho connecting of ec.wera with the mains. Accounts amounting to £2150 were passed for payment. Tractjr to be Bought.
The Works Committee reported:—The surface of most of tho streets are in a bad condition owing to sewer operations and an enormous amount of dust will be prevalent during the summer and must be kept down by watering. .Tliereforo it is absolutely necessary that the present system must be extended. This time last year the same appeal was made but the preßent improvement was installed only at the tail end of the season. It is imperative that .'mmediato attention be given to this position as the reed has never been greater for great quantities of water on the street. The 3".arses cannot bo spared to do the work an general road work must continue and the drays will bo fully occupied in keeping' the roller going. A tractor is the most suitable, convenient, and economical form of hauling*- for the sprinkler. The streets could then be temporarily kept satisfactory until gradually overtaken by the process of grading, metalling and recrowaing which would be and must be continuous as most of the streets have so little metal on them. The committee was empowered to -purchase a tractor at a cost of £260. Impertinent Bequest. "I think "its rather an impertinent request myself," f,aid the Mayor when a letter was read from the Addingto.i Public Library Committee asking the Council to reconsider its decision, as contained in a "curt letter,' not. to receive a deputation from the committee regarding the question of a grant being made. A motion that the letter be received was opposed by Crs. Peters and Ford, who brought forward an amendment that it be referred to the Finance 'Committee. ' The amendment waß defeated an " '" B motion carried on a show of hands, whereupon Cr. Ford asked for a division and was calied to order.
