Great interest has been aroused by the announcement of a "paper ball to be held in the Caledonian Hall during Grand National Week—on Thursday, August 11th—and paper dresses, in dozens and scores, are already m course of construction. Groups or dancers, eight or sixteen in each group, have decided to dress alike, and these "sets," in addition to the many individual costumes of picturesque design, should enhance the attractiveness of the scene. A Charleston competition, for which good prizes.will be given, will be held, and the decorations of the hall will be carried out on an elaborate scale. On Saturday evening the patients of the Coronation Sanatorium enjoyed a concert arranged by Mesdames J. C. Holmes and Ford. Songs were sung by Miss D. Shand and Mrs Stallard, humorous recitations given by Messrs D. Wills and R. Goodland, and a piano solo by Miss E. Alexander. Musical items were supplied by Mrs Ford's Orchestra, comprising Mrs Ford (piano), Misses Alexander and Tremlow and Mr Galetef (violins), Miss Foster ('cello), and Mr Lang (flute). Miss Gibb acted as accompanist. Cars were kindly supplied by Messrs Archibald, Dunn, and Mansfield. A RECEPTION. s The drawing-room at the United Service Hotel, with its big glowing fires and comfortable sofas and couches, looked delightfully cosy and cheerful yesterday afternoon, when approximately one hundred and twenty members of musical circles in Christchurch met to do honour to the celebrated Polish pianist, M. Ignaz Friedman, who arrived in the City yesterday morning. The president and Council of the Canterbury Society ,of Professional Musicians were hosts for the occasion, Madame Gower-Burns receiving the guests. Tea was dispensed in the dining-room, where the tables were decorated with narcissi and white daisies. M. Ignaz Friedman, who was accompanied by Mr Scott Colville, was formally welcomed in a charming'speech by Mr Alfred Bunz, who apologised for the absence of his uncle, Mr Alfred Merton, president of the Society. Over twenty years ago, Mr Bunz said, in his third year of study in Vienna, he had heard M. Friedman play, and he had never forgotten either the musician or his masterly.performance. His Worship the Mayor, Mr J. K. Archer, briefly welcomed the distinguished visitor to Christchurch, and hoped that he might take away with him happy memories of New Zealand. AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE DANCE The dreariness of the weather and the unpleasantness of muddy roads were quickly forgotten, last night, by those fortunate people who were privileged to attend the annual dance at the Canterbury Agricultural College, for the. welcome accorded to them by Mr and Mrs R. E. Alexander was so cordial and the students at the College made such excellent hosts that, none could fail to spend a very happy evening. The College hall at Lincoln was most effectively decorated with blue and gold, the College colours, and the music was supplied by Bailey's Band, with extras splendidly rendered by the College Band.
