CRIMINAL SESSIONS.
AUCKLAND. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TBtEQBAM.) AUCKLAND, July 26. In his charge to the Grand Jury at the opening of the criminal sessions, Mr Justice Herdman said there was nothing in the list to indicate any wave of crime. The number of cases for trial was less than usual. In the charge against a young probationary nurs6 in the Auckland province, who gave birth, to a child, and the child was found in a.locker with a portion of a singlet round its neck, there was no evidence that ah attempt had been made to strangle the child. The girl was overwrought and possibly her mental' condition might have been affected. Under the circumstances he took the responsibility of suggesting to the jury that it would be justified in finding that there was not sufficient evidence to prove that a prima facie case of attempted murder had been made out. •
The Grand Jury found no hill, and the nurse was discharged.
WELLINGTON. [THE PBEBB Special Service.] WELLINGTON, July 26. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court began to-day before Mr Justice Macgregor. His Honour commented on the light list, but remarked that two of the charges were very serious. In each case a valuable life had been lost oy the alleged negligent handling of a motor-car. The Grand Jury returned true bills in all four cases on the calendar.
