"If Chapman had got time to play for Kent at the Oval he could have played in the trial match at Bristol," says Fender. But he explains that he is not protesting officially as it is a matter for the Surrey/Club. He urges that Marylebono should regularise such cases. The "Daily News" points out other instances of cricketers playing for counties, though they cried off representative fixtures. There was no reason to suppose that Kent v.-as seeking an unfair advantage. Chapman explains in the "Daily Mail" that he is able to work for his brewery employers in the morning by rising early, but this would be impossible if he went to Bristol. Ho adds that his firm is interested iu the Oval's refreshment business; thu3 he i 3 able to work and play simultaneously.
