COUNTY COUNCILS.

PAPARUA. The ordinary meeting o£ the Paparua County Council was held recently, -when all members were present. A deputation of three Ladbrooks resident! waited on the Council concerning grading work which bad been done in that locality, In repl?) the chairman stated that the spoil on Drain road was not put there by the Council, but consisted of the debris cast out of the drains by the Drainage Board, and should be removed by that body. The other matters mentioned by the deputation were dealt with by the chairman, who outlined the method followed by the Council, and Stated that the representations made would receive the Council's careful consideration. Messrs G. Witty and D. Jones wrote in reply to tho Council's communication concerning the Tramways Bill, stating that tbey would keep the local bodies' interests in view when the Bill came before the House. Mr Kyle had also previously communicated his views to the Council. The secretary of the South Island Motor Union wrote asking for support for the Union on their endeavour to obtain representation on the Highways Board. It was decided to support the Union. The chairman and treasurer of the Unemployment Committee wrote asking the Council to place before its employees the proposition that they should give threepence in the £ of wages to_ the unemployment fund, and that the Council should subsidise such contributions. It was decided that tho letter be submitted to the employees. , The Christchurch Tramway Board wrote in respect to the level of the Main South road. The chairman and clerk were appointed to meet the Board if desired to discuss the matter. Mr Morgan reported on tho inspection made at Going's Corner, Halswell, in connexion with the proposal that the Council should purchase a small piece of land for rounding off the corner. Tho committee which inspected had no recommendation to make. The clerk was instructed to have the old West Coast road graded from Halkett down as far as the Miners'. It was also decided to pipe a small water-race on Corringa road. The monthly report stated that tho work on the Bealey road was proceeding, the road having been scarified and harrowed and the large boulders picked off. The road had since been rolled down and coated with broken metal, and was now in better order than it had been for a very considerable time. The next portion of main highway to be scarified waß the Main South road from Weedons to Holleston. The work of cleaning up Islington and Templeton had been completed, and these townships were now very trim. The large water-race on the north side of the Roll est on railway station had been pipe*d, and a start had been made on the repairs to the liadbrooks-Tai Tapu road. The road-grader had been continuously at work during tho month during all weathers. The driver's seat had been enclosed, which made it more comfortable for the operator.
