REDCLIFFS SEA WALL.

♦— — BURGESSES DEPUTATION. _.' <• A deputation from the Redcliffs Burgesses' Association, consisting of Messrs J. A. Russell, Aldridge, and Budge, waited on the Sumner Borough Council last evening with reference to the Estuary road eea-wall scheme. Mr J. A. Russell said that they wished to obtain some information as regards the seawall scheme. There was a certain amount of money standing- to their credit with the Council, and they had very little to show for it—only a few loads of metal dumped at the site of the proposed scheme. His Association was anxious to know the position, as there was a possibility of their being able to obtain more money. Mr Aldridge said that it was now twelve months since the Government had granted the subsidy of £350 for the work, and if the scheme were allowed to hang fire it would be necessary to make a fresh application. The Council had undertaken to carry out tho work on the condition that they should provide the rook free of charge, and all labour, sand, shingle, etc., should be paid for by the Association. They were particularly anxious to start the work, which would begin at the top end of Estuary road, would be of a permanent nature, and would be a credit to the borough. Cr. V. E. Hamilton said that there would be no possibility «* * Government subsidy unless the work were of a permanent nature. A plan must be submitted, and it was not fair to ask the Council to go on drawing np * plan when it was not certain what the Government requirements were Cr. Harris said that the Government subsidy had-already been promised, and that the Minister had given him a definite assurance that a email amount of work would be subsidised for a start.
