SPORTING.

TURF GOSSIP.

The Christchurch Hunt Meeting will bo held on Satnrday next. Acceptances close to-morrow. The appearance of the handicaps for the Christchurch Hunt Meeting, to be held next Saturday, has caused additional interest to be taken in that event, which acts as a dress rehearsal for horses engaged at the Grand National Meeting next month. In some cases Mr W. P. Russell, the bancapper acting in place of Mr J. E. Henrys, has awarded Fairy Herald the minimum in the Brabazon Welter. Fairy Herald during the past six weeks has won races at Dunedin, Wellington, and South Canterbury Meetings in easy manner, and on Saturday at Washdyko was receiving two pounds from Chickwheat. Fairy Herald won by a good margin and Chickwheat was unplaced, yet Chickwheat is now set to give Fairy Herald 121b. Mr Russell was at the South Canterbury Meeting on Saturday, but unfortunately left before Fairy He'rald had performed. The race for the Homeby Steeples on Saturday next should be well worth seeing, for included amongst those handicapped are Maunga, Charlatan, Peter Maxwell, Frenchman, and Pamplona, On South Canterbury form, Charlatan will have a big following, but Maunga, who schooled well on Saturday, and Peter Maxwell will have their admirers, especially Peter Maxwell, who is now a prime favourite for the Grand National Steeplechase. ?! Money Order has not won a race for a long time, but is handicapped at 10-9 for the Brabazon Welter at the Christchurch Hunt Meeting. Mustard Pot 10-10 has more than he can carry with credit, but Magna Charta 10-7 and Solrose 10-2 may make worthy opponents for Fairy Herald. Assurance has been doing a lot of useful work of late, and with a race at the Hunt Meeting on Saturday he may be seen to advantage at the Grand National Meeting. Nothing on the tracks has been doing better work of late than Miss Minerva, a brilliant n erformer over any distance up to six furlongs. ■ Perle de Leon struck a hurdle heavily in Wellington., and has not yet recovered from the effects of the knock. He is one of the favourite selections for the Grand National Hurdles. In the Longbeach Hurdles, to bo decided on Saturday next, the per has treated Aberfeldy well. At 61b above the minimum he has been given a rare chance, and so has Bonena, who has been weighted at 9-7. Kawini has arrived at Riccarton, and looks well. A two-year-old parade is to be held at the Christchurch Hunt Eace Meeting on Saturday next and owners wishing to enter horses are requested to send the necessary particulars to the secretary not later than 8 p.m. on Wednesday next.

Berkett, k due to arrive this week with Imprint and Marshal Neil, who are freely engaged at the coming Meeting. The success of Logan Princess at the South Canterbury Hunt Steeplechase Meeting on Saturday brought D. V ithers's total wins for the season up to 31, which is nine more than he gained last season. The 1923 Auckland Cup winner, Nelson Derby, has finished his racing career, and will take up stud dutiel next season. J. S.
