That popular singer, Signor Stella, will contribute Italian songs, and an entertaining programme is being arranged. The West of England Society, Christchurch, have asked Mrs A. D. Houston, late president of the Bridgwater (MidSoinerset) branch of the Victoria League, to give a lecture on Somerset at their next meeting of members to be held this week. During her residence in England, Mrs Houston toured all over the County of Somerset,- and will lecture on "Bridgwater to Wells, including Taunton, Sedgemoor, and Glastonbury Abbey." An enjoyable surprise party was held on Saturday at the residence of Mr and Mrs Woodfield, Slater street, Eichmond. The evening passed quickly and pleasantly with games and competitions. The Coronation Hall, Loburn, presented a gay appearance on Wednesday evening, when the Loburn Football Club held its annual ball. The attendance was not quite as large as was anticipated owing to the wintry weather conditions. An excellent programme of music was supplied by Johnston's Jazz Band (Kaiapoi;, and extras were played by Misses T. Pulley and E. Galletiy and Messrs E. McGrath and A. Wilkinson An energetic committee had decorated the hall with vari-coloured streamers and greenery. FANCY DRESS BALL AT WAIKARI. On Friday, July Bth, the Waikari Hall presented a gay and animated appearance, "when the Plunket Society held a masquerade and fancy dress baJl. The decorations were carried out in festoons of greenery, while orange hoops with varl-coloured streamers were suspended from the beams. The attendance was very large, visitors coming from all the surrounding districts, and practically everyone was in fancy dress. Excellent music was supplied by Durridge's Orchestra, and the duties of M.C.'s were ably filled by Messrs W. Honeybone, W. Traill, and R. Mueller. The difficult task of judging was undertaken by Mrs H. Acton-Adams (Tipapa) and Miss B. Macdonald, and they awarded the prizes as follows: — Most original: Miss Gillanders No More Strikes), Mr D. BALL AT DARFIELD. On Friday evening the Christchurch Bunt Club held its annual ball in the Memorial Hall. The weather was perfect, and the building was filled, 400 people being present. Baskets of ferns suspended from the ceiling and panels of red, the club's colours, formed an effective scheme of decorations, while the lounge was arranged for those tfho wished to play cards. The supper-room was also effectively decorated. Supper was supplied and served by the club to their numerous guests. The music was supplied by Marsden's Orchestra, Christchurch, extras being played by the Darfield Orchestra, assisted by Mr Len. Christie, Christchurch. The duties of Masters of Ceremonies were carried out by Messrs C. Redfern and M. Musgrove During the evening the retiring master of the hounds, Mr Westenra, Dunsandel, was presented with a handsome silver salver from the members of the club as a mark of the high esteem in which he was held. Mr H. A. Knight, in making the presentation, spoke of the excellent manner in which Mr Westenra had carried out the duties of master during the 20 years he filled that position. His tact and good judgment had won the admiration both of the setters and members of the club. He congratulated Mr G. Grigg. Hororata, the new master, on his appointment. Mr Westenra thanked the club for its present, which he valued highly. He exhorted the people to get good horses and strongly recommended boys to get ponies to ride, as the club desired to specialise in the pony section. Mr Grigg thanked the members of the club for the honour conferred on him and hoped he would be as successful as his predecessor had been. Mr C. H. Townsend, speaking on behalf of the guests, expressed their thanks to the members of the Hunt Club for their hospitality in providing such an enjoyable function.

H. | Martin were joint hostesses last night J at a very large and delightfully plea- j sant bridge party given at the Winter j Garden in aid of the funds of St. George's Hospital. Nearly sixty tables j were arranged in the ballroom, and the overflow was comfortably accommodated in the lounge. During the evening Mrs J. W. Crawshaw and Miss Barbara Webb conducted a brisk business in home-made sweets, the proceeds further augmenting the hospital funds. Owing to the generosity of Messrs P. SOCIETY FOR PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

At the monthly meeting of the S.P.W.C. the following members were present:—The president (Rev. C. A. Fraer), who presided, Mesdaanes Tom linson, Roberts, Blackaby, Miss Newton, Messrs McCarthy, and Mackie (hon. treasurer), Rev. P. Revell, Miss Cardale (secretary) Apologies were received from Mesdames H. S. E. Turner, Herbert, T.'D Taylor, Pairman, Biltcliffe, Nurse Stringer, Miss Tabart, Revs. P. Rule and Gardiner Miller. The treasurer reported that Miss de Veaux was going good work. The secretary reported 322 miscellaneous cases, 205 visits, and 235 callers had been attended to. After the secretary reported some of the cases the committee adjourned. HAREWOOD DANCE.

The bachelors and spinsters of Harewood held their annnal ball in the Harewood Hall, which was tastefully decorated in jade green, and old rose. BettelTs Jazz Band supplied the musio, and extras were played by Mr N. Durey. The prize-winners were as follows: Euchre: Mrs F. Hockey and Mr Cain. Lucky spot: Miss M. Fielding and Mr L. Clark. Monte Carlo: Miss G. Bryden and Mr Warman.

WEDDINGS.

PAW r SEY—GREEN,

Recently there was solemnised at the Staveley Church the marriage of Muriel Annie, second daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Green (Bushside), and Ernest Joseph, eldest son of Mr R. Pawsey (Alford Forest), and the late Mrs Pawsey. The church was crowded with well-wishers of the bride and bridegroom. The Rev J. W. P. Dyer, Anglican vicar at Mount Somers, conducted the wedding service, and Miss Lorna Wood (Mount Somers) played the wedding music. The bride, who was given away by her father, looked charming. Her longwaisted frock of white crepe de chine with georgette sleeves was trimmed with satin ribbon and a pearl spray worked on the bodice. She wore a tulle veil surmounted with orange blossoms and carried a bouquet of narcissi, winter roses, and maidenhair fern.

Miss Mona Green (Alford Forest) attended her cousin as bridesmaid. She wore a dress of almond green .crepe de chine trimmed with gold lace. Her hat of black satin and tulle had almond green trimmings, and she carried a bouquet of autumn flowers. Mr Ron. Pawsey attended his brother as best man.

After the marriage service, a reception was held in the Staveley Hall, where the many guests were received by the bride's mother, who wore .a brown frock ornamented with Oriental trimmings and a hat to tone. The bridegroom's step-mother wore a winecoloured coat-frock and hat to match. The usual toast list was honoured. When the bride andobridegroom left on their wedding' tour, the bride was wearing a rust-coloured dress and a wine-coloured coat with fur trimming.

W.C.T.U. SPREYDON BRANCH. , The monthly meeting of the Spreydon branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Baptist Church parlour, Lincoln road. The meeting was mainly devotional, after which some profitable suggestions were made concerning future meetings. It was decided by a unanimous vote that the member for the district should be asked to oppose any legislation which gave greater facilities for gambling. MUNICIPAL BAND'S SOCIAL EVENING.

In aid of the Christchurch Municipal Band's uniform and equipment fund, a very pleasant social evening and dance were held in the Orange Hall last evening. There was a very large attendance, and the evening was thoroughly enjoyed. The function was primarily to attract public interest in the band's activities, and the band plans to raise about £3OO for their uniform and equipment fund. Following were the individual items: —Euphonium solo, Mr J. Simpson; song, Mrs L. Puddey; and song. Miss Scrimshaw. The'music for the dancing was provided by the M.E.D. Band, and Messrs S. 1 J. Geary and Puddey were M.C.'s.
