SYDNEY UNIVERSITY.

FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES. (FROM 008 OWM COBBEBPOTOZNT.) SYDNEY, July 13. The University of Sydney is in the spotlight just at present, It is impecunious, and v is asking the public to see it through its troubles. That it had difficulty in making both ends meet was generally understood, but until it laid bare its position no one in the community realised how poor it was. Judging "from the appeal"which has been launched, the efficiency of this imposing seat of learning is in grave danger of being impaired, and its future is in jeopardy through a lack of funds. A fair sum could be effectively spent on the university grounds alone. The buildings themselves, a massive pile on a magnificent eminence, are one of the architectural glories of Sydney, but "they serve merely to emphasise the neglected and unkempt appearance of[the grounds and parks surrounding them. They are a reproach in many respects to a great university. The university authorities may find it a little difficult to get the money thev need, in view of the fact that only recently money poured so freely into their fund for a war memorial carillon, and of the squabble to which the carillon movement gave rise By the man in the street to-day, and because of a lack of effective propaganda, the university is looked upon as something apart in the community, and as the exclusive academic preserve of the few. Until it removes this impression, and its professors can tell the public something, in popular language, of its real usefulness, it will continue to have a hard struggle to pay its way.
